What's a wedding without really adorable kids to halfway steal the show? These little ones are Deb's nieces named Gwynyth, Hazel, and Joya. Yes, they are precious and yes, they are close in age. But before you think, "wow their parents must have their hands full," just wait. There are six little ones in this family. Gwynyth, Hazel, Joya, Maverick, and then the twins, Reed and Law. Beautiful children and their parents, Joel and Angie are so loving and gracious. Big families are a lot of fun!

A Family Affair

Last weekend I had the opportunity to second shoot for my dad at my cousin's wedding in South Bend Indiana. This wedding was a lot of fun not only because it was colorful and beautiful but also because it was a chance for my huge family to get together and celebrate! The church where Deb and Jake held the ceremony was the same one where my oldest sister and two cousins also got married. And the reception location, the Palais Royale, was breathtaking. This was a great day for me to do what I love, with the people I love. Deb and Jake, I hope you're fully enjoying your new life together. Love to both of you.

Lauren is my closest friend from high school and the day we got to together to do her shoot I got to meet her boyfriend Caleb! Since I go to school in Pennsylvania and they go to school in Ohio it was hard for either of us to make a visit this past semester. I was so excited to finally be able to meet Caleb and to see my dear friend. We drove to Annapolis to shoot around the water and then wandered to find some cool locations. Thank you Annapolis, thank you. You are beautiful, as are Lauren and Caleb. He adores her and I think you'll be able to tell from the photos. Ahh lovely people take such lovely photographs.

Lisa and Brody

Cool couple + cool park = cool pictures.
And Lisa and Brody are really stinkin cool. They're getting married in a little over a month and my camera mourns the fact that I will be in Italy and not in Baltimore to watch them get married (I think I'll get over it because, well, I'll be in Italy). We did the shoot in Patterson Park, right around the spot where they got engaged. Thanks to Brody we laughed our way through the whole thing. Beautiful, hilarious, thoughtful, happy...they are all of these things. Thanks for letting me capture you two in this unique and exciting time in your lives!

Sweet Little Ones

Just a little peek into what my summer was like. A lot of my time was spent learning from those sweet little souls. Lessons like patience, communication, tantrum management, etc. They were worthwhile lessons to be taught and to learn. And as the icing on the cake, we had a lot of fun! Most of our time was spent at parks, coffeeshops, wading pools, libraries, and watching Signing Time. Enjoy their life and energy in the photos!

Family Happenings

It has been a full summer for my family. I have three older siblings that all magically ended up living in Seattle, to my parent's dismay. So where did I go this summer? Seattle, for two months. I got to live with my sister, her husband, and their little boy. Luckily my brother and his wife live a few blocks away and my oldest sister, her husband, and their niños are also a short walk away. So it's not too fun for me to live on the opposite coast but it's always a great time when I visit. It was an awesome summer to live in the city. Unfortunately my oldest sister and her family had to spend a month in Baltimore due to health concerns, but they all made it back for the birth of grandchild #4, Caleb James! What a way to begin a life. The birth was at home around 1:45am; soft lighting, Sigur Ros playing, and a very calm and peaceful birthing team. It was my first time experiencing a birth and I cannot find the words to adequately describe what the experience was like. So here are a few photos of my last few days in Seattle, with the family enjoying member #13.

I have known these two girls for a long time. I took this photo of Mel and Jaya (and an in utero Sasha) two summers ago.

They're growing and stretching and learning and changing quickly. Pretty soon Sasha will be two and Jaya will be six. I've been babysitting them quite a bit this summer and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these little girls better. Jaya will go to a bilingual kindergarten this coming fall, she's smart, creative, funny, and helpful. Sasha is a feisty little person who keeps everyone on their toes. She knows quite a bit of sign language and is always willing to let you know the sign for skunk, sharing, mosquito, party, candle etc. just in case you don't watch Baby Signing Time as religiously as she does. Their mom, Mel, is a midwife and has been a part of my neice and one of my nephews births and will deliver my sister's baby any day! Their family has been a big part of ours and we love them dearly.

This is my sister Steph. My 38 weeks pregnant, finishing second year of grad school, just moved into a new house, sister Steph. She's a busy and beautiful woman. These photos were taken on the 4th of July at Gas Works park. We had a fun night watching the fireworks on Lake Union with the company of about 50,000 other people. This is part one of her pregnancy photos, hopefully part two will be shot and posted soon! Soak in the life and color that is so vibrant and accessible in the summer!

So for three weeks I lived with 19 other women on a mountain outside of Ashland, Oregon. We affectionately called it Fem Camp because we were taking a course on Women's Studies. It was a new, and at times frustrating, experience for me to be so isolated in terms of technology and the amount of people that were around, but it was also a time for quietness and reflection. We spent the mornings together having discussions, listening to lectures, or doing poetry workshops. The environment of listening, acceptance, and love was a beautiful thing to be a part of. I was challenged to rethink many of the things I have been taught and rework those ideas so that I could truly own the things I believe about myself, about religion, and about society. I am full of gratitude that I was able to be a part of this experience and I am trying to carry the changes with me as I assimilate back into regular life.

I love the pacific northwest. It's beautiful. I find comfort in water and mountains and being outside. So I'm going to Oregon for the next three weeks to enjoy all of the things that make it so incredibly wonderful, and get a few credits on the side. The photographer/nerd/woman of the woods in me has never been more excited. I will have very limited access to internet, so no blog updates, but I will be shooting away, and my camera and I will be very happy.

Phil is an only child in college, so this year his mom joined the ranks of parents in the empty nest club. Ok photography is just really cool. A fellow student named Erin that I've had a few classes with found my website and asked me if I would take engagement pictures for her friends Nick and Ashley. Spending Saturday afternoon shooting in Harrisburg with two photogenic people? Yes please, that is something that I am very much always willing to do. Erin came along and we got to talk a lot and discovered many things we have in common. She has such a peaceful and contemplative spirit that is so beautiful. Shooting in Harrisburg was really cool because it's on the water and it's a very small city so walking all around is not a problem. We found some really cool spots and Nick and Ashley were so relaxed and up for anything. My favorite spot was inside the capital building. The intricacy of the artwork and architecture made it the perfect place to photograph. So overall, pretty people + cool settings + creative inspiration + a new friend = wonderful day.

A few days ago one of my professors asked me to take some updated headshots for her to use with something that she's publishing. Obviously, I enthusiastically agreed. I'm really happy with the way they turned out, I've taken three classes with Dr. Williams Paris and I feel that these photos capture the way she teaches. She's intensely passionate about the material and always willing to hear and discuss new ideas and perspectives. Yesterday I did a shoot with three boys, Oliver, Wesley, and Max. Oliver and Wesley are three and a half year old twins and Max is nearly two. These boys have energy and I don't know how their parents keep up with them! Their energy and liveliness made them so fun to photograph and further solidified why I love photographing children so much. Enjoy the energy!

Because I Just Can't Help Myself...

I know I've already posted a lot of pictures from spring break but I can't help posting more...I love the way these pictures came out. Maybe it's the overwhelming color in some of these images after I've been shooting so much grey the past few months or maybe it's the people in the photos, whatever it is I hope you can enjoy them as much as I do! I have a shoot on Saturday with three boys under the age of four and I think it will be as much fun as it sounds.

Well as you can probably tell by the photos, vacation was absolutely wonderful! Time with the family, some cousins, the beach, the warmth, running around the beach with a camera, not being freezing cold and seeing the grey sky, it's the recipe for a great week! My family meets up every year for spring break to visit my grandparents. Before you think we're spending the week in a nursing home, my grandparents are so stinkin cool. My grandfather is nearly 85 and drives a corvette, still plays tennis and golf, and is always up for a fun time. My niece and nephews were loads of fun and anytime that my whole family gets to share a house is absolutely wonderful!

So one day my grandmother was cleaning out her closet and told my cousins and I we could come take whatever we want. This woman is not afraid of color or pattern and obviously has a very fun wardrobe! (She's in the middle) So all the girls decided to wear her clothes to dinner one night...and here's how it looked.

The pants made me look like I was in Aladdin, but the jacket made me look like I was supposed to back up dance for Michael Jackson.

The Seasons Are A-Changin...

Meet Maggie and Sam, two really adorable and fun little people. We got to spend Saturday morning together and it was the warmest weather we've had in a while...spring must finally be on its way! What a wonderful way to begin a day; warm weather, beautiful children, natural surroundings, and a camera.I basically just followed them, camera in hand, all over their family's GORGEOUS property. Those really awesome stone walls in the background have now been bulldozed, so we did the shoot just in time! The kids were super natural and I was thankful that they were active and didn't love to pose (what 2 and 3 year olds do?) because activity creates much more interesting, fun, and natural pictures of children. I'm off to Florida in a few days with my family where hundreds of pictures are sure to be taken of my niece and nephews...I can imagine the posts now...until then I'll be dreaming of beach and poolside photos of some beautiful kids.

Last Saturday night I got to shoot a gymnastics meet for the first time. Since I am a former gymnast I was psyched to photograph this gravity defying sport in which girls fly through the air while keeping perfect form and twisting and turning and flipping, and then, miraculously, stick the landing on two feet without a step in any direction. It really is incredible. The meet was really fun to watch and shoot at the same time, and it was especially fun because I got to work with my Dad, which is always a fun time! Sports photography is so different and I'm looking forward to trying it out more this spring and summer. Check back soon for photos of a session with two wicked adorable kids...

Seurat's Pointillism...patience that I would never have

This morning everyone in my college's art department hopped on buses at the crack of 7:30 and traveled to D.C. for the day. We were dropped off in front of the National Gallery and told to go explore art anywhere we wanted in the city. A few friends and I wandered around the National Gallery to see some of the wonderful 16th century Italian paintings, some modern sculptures, and cool contemporary pieces. After that we took the metro to the National Cathedral drooled over the insanely beautiful architecture, stain glass windows, sculptures, and the list goes on and on. I couldn't believe I had never been there before since I grew up in Baltimore! They had a beautiful exhibit of photos from President Obama's inauguration and I thought this prayer was especially meaningful...

Harrisburg Ballet Theater

Last week I had an awesome opportunity to shoot at the Harrisburg Ballet Theater. It was so exciting to see the grace and beauty of the young dancers. Between Green and Grey

Yesterday I spent a few hours mixing paint for a project in a class called color and design. The earth tones were so beautiful and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to photograph a part of the mixing process. I was more excited about photographing the paint than I was about actually mixing the paint and completing the project, I guess that's an indicator of where my heart and my passion lies. Also, this project reminded me of a wonderful song by Nickel Creek called Green and Grey. A few painting pictures follow, enjoy the earthiness!

Meet the hot models I got to shoot with today...Jenn and Kristen. They were fabulous and we had so much fun! We went to a few different locations including a torn down barn, which ended up being perfect for the looks we wanted! The girls were great and braved the cold through four different outfit changes.
